The first day of registration at Witwatersrand University Kirsten Mohamed found herself faced with two choices: Law or Dramatic Arts, and like any smart person, she chose Dramatic Arts. Kirsten went on to obtain her Honours’ in Dramatic Arts, majoring in performance, writing, and directing. She entered the entertainment industry with a focus on performance, securing roles in Disney’s Cookabout, The River, and Generations to name a few. Kirsten decided to expand her love of storytelling by transitioning into screenwriting with her movie, Mbalenhle, earning a SAFTA nomination, and her comedy Ke Bono Spoko earning an AMVCA nomination for best original film. The comedy bug called, and Kirsten answered by writing on the Roast of Khanyi Mbau and creative producing Amazon’s Last One Laughing presented by comedy legend, Trevor Noah. She is currently writing on SABC 1’s Amalanga Awafani, the second season of the groundbreaking Netflix series Go!, and her debut feature thriller, Closure. Kirsten is passionate about making work that reflects the complexities of the multicultural South Africa that she was raised in, interrogating the insidious nature of emotional and physical abuse in familial and romantic structures, and exploring classic fairytales and African mythology within modern society.
