Samukele Simelane
Camera Operator/Video Editor
Newcastle-born visual storyteller Samukele Simelane is a celebrated camera operator, video editor, and founder of Berrado Pictures. His journey into media began in his youth, capturing moments with whatever tools he could find. That early fascination with African-centred narratives and the power of visuals set him on a clear path. He went on to study Television and Media Practices at Boston Media House. Simelane’s professional breakthrough came at eTV’s The Morning Show, where he operated a jib and news camera for over 260 live episodes. His team’s efforts contributed to a consistent 20% increase in viewership, placing the show at the top of morning TV ratings for a full year.
Through Berrado Pictures, Simelane created a platform focused on high-quality African storytelling. His work spans documentaries, live events, commercials, and music videos, with notable collaborations including Tiger Brands, PanSALB, and the Morvite campaign.
He was named Best Cinematographer/Videographer 2024/2025 by the Young Achievers Africa Awards and was recognised among the Influential Men of the Year 2025. He is also the co-creator of iDiski Dine, a fast-growing podcast that combines South Africans’ love of football with storytelling. Simelane has cemented himself as one of the country’s most promising media entrepreneurs. He continues to mentor young talent, pursue impactful stories, and hopes to one day collaborate with the likes of Ryan Coogler. His mantra: “Master your craft, stay consistent, and never stop learning.”
