F is for Father is a part-documentary, part-curatorial film exploring the meaning of fatherhood in South Africa’s Black community. Told through candid, funny, and moving interviews with six participants, the film blends real stories with dramatic monologues based on true accounts of fatherhood.
Directed by award-winning journalist Sihle Mthembu, and featuring poet Khulani Maseko and radio host Lerato Sokhulu, the film is inspired by Sisonke Msimang’s 2015 Ruth First Lecture with Lebo Mashile. By combining testimony and performance, F is for Father gives voice to the private realities of Black fatherhood, pushing the boundaries of traditional documentary storytelling.
Nominated for Best Documentary Short at the 2018 Simon Sabela Awards.
