In 1986 South Africa, one year after her brother vanished, a grieving young woman, joins a coven of witches who use their powers in the war against Apartheid. She is forced to go undercover as a helper in the home of the police commander she believes is responsible for her brother’s disappearance, but her mission is threatened when she falls in love with his charming son.
She rebels against her father’s strict rules, fails nursing school and hides it from her family. Her family is furious when they learn she dropped out, and even more so when they discover her involvement with the Coven. Nandi pleads with them to understand that she’s doing it for Sabelo, for them to have closure. Everything shatters when Qiniso catches her snooping through his father’s things. Hurt that she only used him to get to his father, he turns her in. Captured by Jacob, Nandi is tortured for information about the Coven. He offers her a trade: the names of her accomplices in exchange for answers about her brother’s disappearance. She refuses.
Imprisoned and alone, Nandi plots her escape. Meanwhile, a remorseful Qiniso tells the Coven where she’s being held. They launch a rescue mission, but when they arrive, Nandi has already freed herself and killed Jacob. With the police now hot on her heels Nandi is forced to flee her home for good. Before going underground, she meets Qiniso one last time. She tells him their love is complicated, but it’s real. He joins her, and the two cross the border into Mozambique, where the Coven has arranged a safehouse. But just as Nandi begins to breathe, Sabelo walks through the door, alive. He says he escaped being captured by Jacob but won’t explain why he never reached out. Something about him is different. And Nandi knows: her fight is not over. Because now, she must uncover the truth, has her brother been turned?

A year after her brother Sabelo’s disappearance, Nandi, a young nursing student, sees her family unravelling. When her father suggests renting out Sabelo’s vacant room and her mother sinks deeper into depression, Nandi decides she must act. While doing her nursing practicals, she helps a mysteriously injured woman named Mabel. When the Apartheid police come for Mabel, Nandi lies to protect her. Mabel later tracks her down and invites her to join the Coven, a secret group of women who use traditional healing and spiritual gifts to aid the underground struggle against apartheid. Nandi only agrees on one condition: they must help her find out what happened to her brother. She’s assigned to work undercover as a helper in the home of Jacob Mkhonza, the police commander who ordered Sabelo’s arrest. There, she meets his son, Qiniso, and feeds the Coven information on Jacob’s operations. Nandi begins living a double life, helper by day, nurse by night. Her connection with Qiniso grows as they bond over their strained relationships with their parents, and they fall into a secret romance.
